Earlier this past week, John Baird visited the Republic of Iraq in order to open up a new diplomatic mission, marking the first visit by a Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs to the country since 1976. Although Baird’s trip may signal a return to normalcy in Iraq, the country continues to be wracked by violence. A major suicide bombing and grenade attack against a political rally in Baquba left dozens dead and injured. Iraqi authorities are striking back at militants though, demonstrated by the execution of four alleged Iraqi Al-Qaeda leaders in Baghdad last Tuesday (April 2, 2013 UPI; April 1, 2013 CBC News; April 6, 2013 BBC News).
