Peru has hosted an emergency meeting of UNASUR leaders in Lima after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s victory in last Sunday’s presidential election. The meeting was called to show support and recognition for the new Venezuelan government after internal and external allegations of fixed elections. During the meeting UNASUR leaders endorsed President Maduro’s victory against denial from the US to recognize the new government but this appears to be after Maduro agreed to an audit of the election results. After the emergency meeting the leaders travelled to Caracas, Venezuela to attend President Maduro’s inauguration ceremony on Friday.
