Right-wing Colorado Party leader Horacio Cartes has emerged victorious over opposition leader Efrain Alegre from Paraguay’s presidential elections this past week. The business magnate, who is relatively new to the political arena, plans to take his party and the country in a “new direction” by focusing on Paraguay’s poverty-stricken population. President-elect Cartes has also made Paraguay’s reintegration into Mercosur a major priority for his new government, stating that it abandoning the bloc would be “sheer nonsense”. Mercosur members, upon hearing of President-elect Cartes’ victory, were quick to contact him and congratulate him on his victory.
