The Syrian civil war is taking a heavy toll on those inside and outside the country and with no respite in site, rumours have spread that veteran UN diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, the special UN-Arab League mediator for Syria, is considering resigning his post in frustration at the lack of progress on the ground. Embattled Syrian president Bashar al-Assad warned Western nations in television interview this week that his country’s internal conflict may destabilize the region and ultimately result in anti-government Islamic militants in Syria striking targets in the heart of the US and Europe. In other news, the United Kingdom has expressed its growing concern over allegations of the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict although it admitted that it is unclear which side might have deployed such weapons.
