President Obama paid a visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, arriving in Amman on March 21. Syria dominated the discussions between Obama and King Abdullah II, who lashed out earlier in the week at powerful regional leaders including Egypt’s Mohamed Mursi and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In addition, King Abdullah reiterated the enormous economic pressure that Jordan is facing from an influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. Obama pledged to provide the country with US$200 million in order to help Jordan bear the brunt of the infrastructural challenges emanating from its role as a host-country for an increasing number of Syrians fleeing the chaos in their home country.
