The recent grounding of Bolivian President Evo Morales’ plane while flying through EU countries has caused massive backlash from Mercosur heads of state. Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Uruguay have all announced that they will be recalling envoys to France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. The Mercosur heads of state have accused these countries of violating international law and are demanding retribution. France has issued a formal apology – calling the entire incident a misunderstanding – while no comment has been made by the other countries. Altogether, the issue has further aggravated US-Bolivia relations after the United States government has repeatedly failed to extradite former Bolivian president Sanchez de Lozada who is wanted for crimes of genocide.
