Chile’s governing conservative bloc has elected a new candidate to run against Former President Michele Bachelet in the country’s upcoming presidential election. Chilean Labour Minister Evelyn Matthei has been elected as the conservative party’s presidential candidate. Minister Matthei will be replacing the previous conservative candidate Pablo Longueira who resigned last week under claims of depression. The party is confident that Matthei, the daughter of one of the member of the military junta that ruled the country for nearly two decades, will pose a strong threat to former President Bachelet and may defeat her in the coming elections.
