A former US marine has allegedly been captured by Colombia’s major rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The US government has released a statement advising that the individual is in Colombia as a tourist and is not part of the US mission in Colombia. As such, the US ambassador to Colombia is requesting that they release the former marine immediately. FARC representatives have stated that they are willing to release the marine to a humanitarian commission in the “spirit of talks that are advancing in Havana with the Colombian government”. No specific details have been released regarding the release date or the logistics of his release. (July 20, 2013 NYT; July 20, 2013 Reuters)
