Uruguayan Foreign Minister Luis Almagro is pushing for stronger talks between the European Union and Mercosur before year’s end when a large number of Uruguayan export tariff benefits expire. Minister Almagro states that the end of the benefits will constitute a large blow for many Uruguayan industries which will, in turn, affect both EU and Mercosur trade. Foreign Minister Almagro states that the most industries impacted will be natural exports such as agricultural goods and fisheries, but that wood and pulp could also be seriously affected. Negotiations have thus far been stalled due to EU refusals, but Uruguay is hopeful that the processes will be settled before year’s end. (July 16, 2013 MercoPress)
